Operation Moshtarak by Graeme Lothian. 3.30am, 13th February 2010. RAF Chinooks come in to land at Bastion to enplane troops. There were eleven flights of airframes commencing at 3.30 am and lasting three hours until first light. The Regiments involved: The 1st Royal Welsh, 1st Grenadier Guards Battle Group, Scots Guards, US Marine Corps and various ISAF controlled units. ANA and ANP. The scene was witnessed and filmed and photographed for the BBC by the official war artist on Herrick 11. |

Urban Dasht by David Rowlands. A Combat Logistic Patrol establishes a desert laager for the night, following protracted CLP operations into the Green Zone, Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. Each CLP traveled in single file during the day, but in the evening would form up in three columns and halt. The personnel immediately carry out clearance drills, searching for IEDs by sweeping the ground around their vehicles with Vallon detectors. A Support Vehicle (Recovery) of the REME with its crane is working to repair a vehicle. The leading vehicles in the column at the right of our view are Royal Engineer assets comprising the Talisman system. A Mastiff command-post with mast-mounted electro-optic sensors has a Remote Weapon System. Behind it is a JCB High Mobility Engineer Excavator; behind it are more RE vehicles including a Buffalo. The leading Mastiffs are also fitted with the SPARK - Self Protection Adaptive Roller Kit for protection against mines and pressure-initiated IEDs. There are some areas of urban desert; that is, in close vicinity of the population but still very much in a desert landscape. Dasht means plain or desert. |

EOD Bomb Disposal Engineers by Graeme Lothian. An EOD team move down a track in Helmand Province - watched by curious locals. The lead elements carrying a 'Vallon' (IED mine detector) and a dog handler will go out in front of the main command soldiers. If detected, the personnel seen in the rear of the group will make safe the IED and the process can begin again. |

The defenders of the Musa Qala District centre compound comprised of an ad hoc company, made up from elements of Royal Irish, Danish, and 3 PARA, designated E company. For some 40 days they repelled over 100 attacks. One of the longest serving and most effective units in the base was the Royal Irish 81mm mortar section. |

Helmand Faces by Graeme Lothian. Three Afghan locals who were at two 'Shuras' (meetings). I initially sketched them as they sat on the floor talking to the soldiers from ISAF. Afterwards I asked them to pose for me as I took their photos. They are all from around the Lashkar Gah region. Artist Graeme Lothian appeared with this original painting on the BBC's The One Show on Wednesday 18th July 2012, in a piece on British War Artists. |

Crossing the Helmand by David Pentland. Musa Qala, Afghanistan, 25th May 2008. While returning to Sangin following an operation in support of 2 PARA battlegroup, the Vikings of 3rd Troop, Armoured Support Company, Royal Marines were the target of an enemy ambush. As the convoy began to cross the Helmand river the waiting Taliban engaged the convoy with RPGs, heavy machine gun and sniper fire. Amazingly despite this hail of fire no one was hit until tragically Marine Dale Gostick was killed and two others injured when his vehicle was blown up by a massive IED. |
