Dawn on the 13th February 2010, Soldiers disembark from Chinooks in the area of Operations - Helmind Province. The Regiments involved: The 1st Royal Welsh, 1st Grenadier Guards Battle Group, Scots Guards, US Marine Corps and various ISAF controlled units. ANA and ANP.

A convoy of re-supply lorries of the Royal Logistics Corps travel through Northern Helmand, supported by a force protection unit in their Land Rover WMIK (Weapons Mounted Installations Kit).

Casualties arriving into the emergency department of the Hospital at Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Camp Bastion's hospital is manned by regular and reserve personnel of the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force of the Joint Force Medical Group.


REME Recovery by Graeme Lothian.

Recovering a vehicle in Helmand. A support dumper truck has edged over to the side of the track which has given way under the weight. Two REME soldiers are pulling out the tow-rope (which is made of metal cables) and will attach this to the stranded vehicle. every vehicle will have a top-gunner, heavily armed with an array of weapons - usually the GPMG. When the convoy is stationary for any period of time they are at their most vulnerable to attack, so speed is of the essence to get the convoy on its way again.

Shura is an Arabic word meaning 'consultation'. It is mentioned three times in the Quran as a praiseworthy activity. ISAF forces sit down to discuss local events and to exchange views over a pot of sweet tea. Sitting cross-legged, the ISAF are allowed to wear their boots and the locals fully understand that Europeans cannot sit cross-legged for even a short time.

WMiK Convoy Protection - Afghanistan by Graeme Lothian.

WMiks providing cover protection for large convoy. Helmand, Afghanistan. Manufactured by Land Rover and Ricardo, the WMiK or Weapons Mount Installation Kit typically carries one heavy machine gun and one general purpose machine gun. In use as reconnaissance and close support vehicles, they have become recognised as a symbol of the British forces in Afghanistan.

Helmand Province, Afghanistan, March 2010. The Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task Force was originally composed of Royal Logistical Corps EOD, Pioneer, and Royal Engineer teams. Currently the C-IED task force is a tri service formation including units from the Royal Navy and RAF. The most dangerous part of their work involves locating and isolating IED's before they explode, in this case making roads safe to use.
