Jonny Wilkinson | Jonny Wilkinson Jonny Wilkinson was born in 1979, and is best known for kicking the winning drop goal for England in the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Having established himself as a world class kicker in the sport over the previous few seasons, he managed to make the opportunity for a drop goal in the last seconds of extra time against the might of Australia in the final. The match had reached the end of normal time as a draw, and the score was 17-17 as the ball left Jonny Wilkinson's boot. With no time left for Australia to respond to the kick, England won the World Cup thanks to the extra three points Jonny Wilkinson provided with his kick. He has since been plagued with injuries, but managed to return in 2007 to see England reach the World Cup final once again, only to be defeated at the last by a strong South African team. He is a record breaking points scorer and is probably still the best known rugby kicker in the world. |
