Geoffrey Howllet | General Sir Geoffrey Howlett, KBE, MC General Sir Geoffrey Hugh Whitby Howlett KBE MC was born on 5th February 1930, educated at Wellington College before going joining the British Army and was accepted to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment in 1950 and was awarded the Military Cross in 1952. General Sir Geoffrey Hugh Whitby Howlett KBE MC was appointed Commanding Offcier of the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment in 1971 and in 1975 he was made Commander of the 16th Parachute Regiment. In 1979 he was appointed the General Officer Commanding 1st Armoured Division and from 1982 to 1983 the Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. This was followed by becoming GOC South Eastern District and in 1986 was made Commander in Chief of Allied Forces Northern Europe. General Sir Geoffrey Hugh Whitby Howlett KBE MC retired in 1989. He was Colonel Commandant of the Parachute Regiment from 1983 to 1990 |

The Paras are Landing by Terence Cuneo. To achieve the effects Terence Cuneo needed to put this subject over with conviction, he stood on a Surrey heath watching men unload form the sky. That seemingly gentle occupation turned out to be a shade less peaceful than he might have supposed. A container came thumping down missing him by a couple of yards, followed rapidly by a paratrooper, whom he had not spotted, missing him by barely two feet. As the aim was obviously improving, Terence Cuneo decided to move on. Luckily, the grounded figures proved far less menacing to portray. (excerpt from Military paintings by Terence Cuneo) |
