The Siege of Delhi, 1857 by Alfred Pearse (PC) The Siege of Delhi was one of the key battles during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Delhi had been captured by the rebels on the 11th of May, with a lot of the civilians inside the city joining the rebel mob. The city was determined to be too well fortified and too strongly held to be attacked overtly, so a siege was devised.The siege lasted from June to September before a frontal assault took place, led by a large bombardment of the city. Ultimately the city was re-captured on the 21st of September 1857. Taken from the original book plates published in 1901.
