First World War aviation art prints of the Sopwith Pup aircraft. Our collection of prints and original paintings of the Sopwith Pup aircraft of World War One.
The Sopwith Pup was a single-bay, single-seat biplane aircraft with a fabric-covered, wooden framework and staggered, equal-span wings. The prototype and most production Pups were powered by the 80 hp (60 kW) Le Rhone engine and armed with a single 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun which was synchronized with the Sopwith - Kauper synchronizer. The first Sopwth Pup prototype was completed in February 1916 with flight tests in late March. The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) were impressed and ordered two more prototypes, then placed a production order. Deliveries of the Pups started in August 1916. The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) also placed large orders for Pups. The RFC orders were built by Standard Motor Co and Whitehead Aircraft who had both been sub-contracted. Deliveries did not commence until the beginning of 1917. The Sopwith Pup was eventually outclassed by newer German fighters, but some continued in service on the Western Front until the end of 1917. The remaining Sopwith Pups were used for Home Defence and training units. The Pup's docile flying characteristics also made it ideal for use in Aircraft Carrier Carrier deck landing and takeoff experiments and many were used on Royal Navy Battleships. A total of 1,770 Pups were built by Sopwith (96), Standard Motor Co (850), Whitehead Aircraft (820), and Willaim Beardmore and co building 30 aircraft

Captain Robert Little by Ivan Berryman.

Captain Robert Little by Ivan Berryman.

With a final 47 victories to his credit, Robert Alexander Little was one of the highest-scoring British aces of World War 1, beginning his career with the famous No 8 (Naval) Squadron in 1916, flying Sopwith Pup N5182, as shown here. On 21st April 1917, he was attacked and shot down by six aircraft of Jasta Boelke, Little being thrown from the cockpit of his Sopwith Camel on impact with the ground. As the German aircraft swooped in to rake the wreckage with machine gun fire, Little pulled his Webley from its holster and began returning fire before being assisted by British infantry with their Lewis guns. Such was the character of this great pilot who finally met his death whilst attacking Gotha bombers on the night of 27th May 1918.

Sopwith Pup Aces of World War One.

Sopwith Pup Aces of World War One.

The Sopwith Pup was the forerunner of the hugely successful Sopwith Camel, which duly became the most successful fighter of World War 1. The first proper British fighting scout, the first Pups – the Royal Naval Air Service – arrived on the Western Front in 1916. Although regarded as a nice aeroplane to fly, pilots who used it in combat gained much success during the first half of 1917. The Royal Flying Corps also used the Pup from January 1917 onwards, with the final combats with the machine occurring in December of that year. This book describes the combat careers of the successful Pup aces, how they flew and how they fought.
